Word and Sharepoint Product Managers Don't Get Along

I've had to manage websites with Sharepoint the past couple of years and have never been able to upload a word file and have it viewable without asking users to login to see it. Is this a Sharepoint bug or do the product managers at MS for Sharepoint and Word just not get along?

You know... maybe the Word product manager wanted the Sharepoint person's job or something way in the past, so he coded in some weird flag that won't allow people to view Word files on Sharepoint sites without having to login first.

It makes no sense to me that a Microsoft product won't work on a Microsoft website.
